  • Benign prostatic hypertrophy Benign enlargement of the prostate gland
  • Bladder neck incision (BNI) An operation whereby an incision is made at the neck of the bladder to relieve an obstruction
  • Circumcision Removal of the foreskin
  • Cystolitholopaxy An operation in which stones are broken up and removed from the bladder via a cystoscope (telescope)
  • Cystoscopy Examination of the bladder and urethra using a telescope
  • Flexible cystoscopy Examination of the urethra and bladder performed under local anaesthetic using a soft (flexible) telescope
  • Haematuria Blood in the urine
  • Hydrocoele An accumulation of fluid around the testis
  • Nocturia The need to wake to pass urine during the night
  • Optical urethrotomy Cutting along the urethra to open out a stricture
  • Orchiectomy Surgical removal of a testicle
  • Phimosis A condition whereby the foreskin cannot be fully retracted from the head of the penis
  • Renal calculi Kidney stones
  • Renal colic Pain caused by kidney stones
  • Stent A small tube placed between the kidney and the bladder to aid the flow of urine to the bladder, and to prevent obstruction to this flow
  • TURBT (Transurethral resection of bladder tumour) An endoscopic operation to remove a bladder tumour
  • TURP (Transurethral resection of prostate) An endoscopic operation to remove the prostate
  • Urethral stricture Narrowing of the urethra
  • (Uro)flow and (bladder) scan A measurement of the strength of urinary flow, often followed by an ultrasound scan of the bladder to endure it is empty
